A T Level is a two-year, Level 3 technical qualification taken after GCSEs, broadly equivalent in size to three A Levels. T Levels were first taught from September 2020 and there are now 21 available, with a marketing route added in September 2025. What separates them from a classroom-only course is the mandatory industry placement: every T Level student completes a minimum of 315 hours — roughly 45 days — with an employer, around a fifth of the programme, delivered as a block, on day-release or as a hybrid. T Levels are not being phased out; they are the government's flagship technical route, sitting alongside A Levels and, from September 2027, the new V Levels. For a provider, the demanding part is rarely the syllabus — it is the workforce behind it. Delivering a T Level well needs technical tutors with current industry credibility, coordinators to source and manage those placement hours, and assessors: the roles hardest to fill in technical subjects.

What is a T Level — and what is it equivalent to?

A T Level is a Level 3 technical study programme sat over two years after GCSEs, designed with employers so that what students learn maps to what an occupation actually needs. In size it is broadly equivalent to three A Levels, which is the comparison most parents, students and referral partners reach for. The technical content is set against an awarding organisation's specification; students combine that classroom and workshop learning with a substantial spell in a real workplace before they are awarded the qualification.

The programme has grown steadily rather than overnight. T Levels were first taught from September 2020 in a handful of routes, and there are now 21 available across areas such as construction, digital, health and science, engineering and manufacturing, education and childcare, and — added in September 2025 — marketing. What is the T Level industry placement?

The industry placement is the defining feature of a T Level, and the part that carries the biggest operational load for a provider. Every student must complete a minimum of 315 hours — approximately 45 days — with an employer, which works out at around 20% of the two-year programme. Providers can arrange it as a single block, as regular day-release across the year, or as a hybrid, depending on the sector and the employer.

Those hours do not organise themselves. Someone has to find the placements, match them to students and to the occupational content, brief and support the host employers, quality-assure what the student actually does on site, and keep the whole thing on track when a placement falls through mid-year. On a technical route — where the host might be an engineering firm, an NHS department or a software team — that is skilled, relationship-heavy work. It is why the industry-placement coordinator has become a distinct role in its own right, and why scaling a T Level cohort is as much a staffing question as a curriculum one.

Are T Levels the same as BTEC — or being phased out?

No — a T Level and a BTEC are different qualifications on different routes, and the two are often confused. A BTEC (and other applied general qualifications) has historically been a broad vocational option that many students combined with, or took instead of, A Levels; a T Level is a larger, single technical programme with a mandatory industry placement built in. They are not interchangeable, and a student is not simply "doing the new version of a BTEC" when they enrol on a T Level.

It is also worth being precise on timing, because the picture moves. T Levels are not being phased out — they are the government's flagship technical route for 16 to 19-year-olds. Defunding of BTEC and other applied general qualifications was delayed to autumn 2027, so BTECs have not been scrapped for 2025/26. And from September 2027, a separate new route — V Levels — begins first teaching, sitting alongside T Levels and A Levels rather than replacing them. For a provider planning its 16-to-19 offer, that means several routes coexisting for the next few years, each with its own staffing profile.

What does delivering T Levels demand of your staffing?

This is where a T Level stops being a policy line and becomes a workforce plan. The qualification is technical, so it needs tutors who are genuinely credible in the occupation — people who have done the work, not only read about it — and who can also teach. That combination is what the sector calls dual professionalism: current or recent industry practice paired with the ability to plan, deliver and assess post-16 learning. It is a demanding brief, and it is the single biggest constraint on expanding technical provision.

The honest reading is that the syllabus is the easy part. A college or training provider can validate a curriculum far more quickly than it can hire a motor-vehicle tutor who left the trade last year, or a placement coordinator who can hold 40 employer relationships together across a cohort. The roles hardest to fill for technical delivery

The pressure sits where education competes most directly with industry for the same people. In engineering, digital, construction and health, a skilled practitioner can usually earn more staying in the sector than moving into teaching it, which thins the pool of dual-professional tutors a T Level relies on. Assessors in those same subjects are already among the harder vacancies in FE and skills, and adding technical cohorts does not ease that. Placement coordination, meanwhile, is a newer specialism: providers scaling T Levels are often hiring for a role they did not have five years ago, against a small field of people who have done it before.
